Colostomy Bag – What Is It?

A colostomy bag is a plastic pouch, or pocket, used to provide relief for constipation. A traditional colostomy is a small opening in your large intestine, created by a rubber band or other method used to seal off the opening. In recent years, more people have opted for this option as it provides a much faster solution for constipation. It also allows a person to go to the bathroom without worrying about not being able to release gas completely. click to read
A colostomy bag is generally only used for a short period of time. As soon as the medication and the pouch have worn out or become ineffective, a new pouch can be placed and this process repeated. This is important because it helps avoid another bout of constipation and it allows the person to maintain a regular bowel movement. Unlike other types of surgery, a colostomy bag doesn’t use any knives or other instruments which can lead to complications and even amputation if the person isn’t careful.
Colostomy bags are made from either a material such as vinyl or nylon. Nylon is considered the strongest but it is also the most expensive. If you opt for this option, make sure that it is FDA approved so you won’t experience any uncomfortable or unwanted side effects. The material will come pre-sealed, so you won’t have to worry about problems such as leaking as it is already present. A plastic tube known as a flange is present on both ends of the pouch. To complete the stoma care, a doctor will cut a small hole in your abdomen and connect the flange to the tube feeding the colostomy bag.
