Begin by turning off the thermostat control. Take everything out and do not hesitate to throw all expired and spoiled food into the trash can. Place the rest of the food that is still good in a cooler or an ice box to keep it from spoiling while you clean the refrigerator.
Remove all removable shelves and drawers. Wash these parts with warm water and soap, making sure food particles are removed. Let it drain in a dish rack. With the use of a sponge or washcloth, clean the inside of the refrigerator in a water and vinegar solution. You can also alternatively use a baking soda and water mixture. Make sure to also reach out the far ends and rubber door closure areas. You can start at the top part, working your way down to the bottom to avoid dripping on already cleaned areas. After a round, wash cloth or sponge to remove dirt and odor and continue on the next shelf. Do the same steps for cleaning the freezer.
Wipe dry all cleaned areas, including the outside of the refrigerator. Use a clean towel or dry cloth to thoroughly dry all the areas. Then turn the thermostat back on to the suggested setting. Place all shelves and drawers back in.
Return all the remaining food inside. Wipe dry all containers and jars before placing it back. You may need to do a little organizing per shelf, and not to mix it all up. Maybe perishables and leftovers on the top shelf, canned and bottled drinks on the bottom. Also make sure to store meat in a separate container inside the freezer and ideally on the bottom part, to avoid dripping of its juices.
